To Walter Schaffner

Dear Herr Schaffner, 16 February 1961

In reply to your question about levitation I myself have never observed the levitation of a living body.

But apparently such things do happen.

On the other hand I have seen objects moving that were not directly touched and moreover under absolutely satisfactory scientific conditions.

One could describe these movements as levitation if one assumes that the objects moved by themselves.

But this does not seem to have been the case, since all the objects that apparently moved by themselves moved as though lifted, shaken, or thrown by a hand.

In this series of experiments I, together with other observers, saw a hand and felt its pressure-apparently the hand that caused all the other phenomena of this kind.

These phenomena have nothing to do with the “will,” since they occurred only when the medium was in a trance and precisely not in control of his will.

They seem to fall into the category of poltergeist manifestations.

The experiments here mentioned were conducted in the Psychiatric Clinic at the Burghblzli in Zurich and not at the Federal Polytechnic.

Frankly, I see no connection between these phenomena and Ufos.

Unfortunately the latter phenomenon, if it exists at all, is complicated in the highest degree by fantasies and downright fraud.

I must caution you against people like Desmond Leslie and George Adamski.

Although I have been studying the Ufo phenomenon for about 12 years now and have read practically all the relevant literature, I a m still unable to form a satisfactory picture of it or to assert that anything adequate is known about the nature of Ufos.

I cannot even say whether they exist or not.

Whether so-called levitation is in some way connected with antigravity is an unanswerable question.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,
