The mission of The Jungian Center for the Spiritual Sciences is to offer whole-person learning—learning that engages not only the mind, but also the heart, soul, and spirit—to support the individuation of adults of all ages and backgrounds.
The Jungian Center for the Spiritual Sciences is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the dissemination of the wisdom in the psychology and philosophy of C.G. Jung. Toward the fulfillment of this mission we offer courses, books, independent study/distance learning courses, an array of essays archived on this site, and a newsletter and new essay posted each month.
About The Jungian Center for the Spiritual Sciences
The Jungian Center for the Spiritual Sciences (JCSS) is a new kind of educational organization based around the implications of the philosophy and psychology of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung. Its purpose is to support the individuation process of the members of its community, via a series of experiences that provide whole-person learning—learning that engages not only students’ minds but their hearts, souls and spirits.
Toward that end, the Center has developed courses, workshops and training programs that depart from the schema typical in most Western educational systems in which departments are organized around disciplines. Instead, the JCSS recognizes that there are many paths “up the mountain” of the spiritual journey, and as humans we come to the journey as a unity of mind, body, soul and spirit.
So the learning experience is arranged around paths (viae) that have been trod for thousands of years by adepts and seekers in both Eastern and Western traditions, paths that resonate with the totality of our being as humans.

The Founder
Born and raised in the suburbs of New York City, Sue Mehrtens has been a teacher for over 50 years. Her first “students” were her dolls, and she grew up with a love of learning and sharing knowledge, finding a kindred spirit in Chaucer’s scholar, who “gladly wold he lerne, and gladly teach.”
Going to school in the days when students had perhaps 30 elective credits, Sue got a rigorous and thorough education at Queens College of the City University of New York, and Yale University, from which she earned a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies in 1973. Then she switched sides of the desk for 17 years, teaching college courses in history, medieval studies, Latin, Greek, environmental studies, and women’s studies.
With her longstanding interest in things maritime, a Navigator’s rating from the U.S. Power Squadron and a Captain’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard, from 1977 to 1987 Sue ran a marine studies program at College of the Atlantic, and an adult education course that prepped Maine citizens for the Captain’s license exam.
Sue’s staid and conventional life as an academic was upended in 1983, when a dream warned her of the imminent deaths of friends and family. She was also told that she would give up everything and her life would be transformed. Five days later, the dream’s predictions began to come true: a friend dropped dead. Within 6 months she had lost another friend, two aunts and an uncle, and everything in her life began to fall away.
Thus began a decades-long journey—the archetypal “night sea journey” of the soul—which led Sue to the works of Carl Jung; to analysis (begun in 1985 and still underway); and to voracious learning, from books, teachers, and life itself. Sue has studied with Michael Mamas, Jason Shulman, Penney Peirce, the Rosicrucians, at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, the Baltimore Spiritual Science Center, and Atlantic University, from which she earned her second Master’s degree, in transpersonal counseling, in 1997.
She maintains a private practice in archetypal astrology and dream work with students all over the world, many of whom she first met in her global travels.
Sue is the author, co-author or editor of multiple books, including The Fourth Wave: Business in the 21st Century; Intuitive Imagery: A Resource at Work, The Leap-Frog Option, Wake Up, South Africa!, Revisioning Science: Essays toward a New Knowledge Base for Our Culture, and How to Survive and Thrive in the Coming Earth Changes.
