General Description:

Contemplative Jung: Understanding and practicing the spiritual exercises of analytical psychology.

C.G. Jung and, more importantly for us, his work was part theory, part clinical application and part contemplative practice. This course will be an experiential exploration of Jung’s concepts, theories and practices. For Jung, the path of the psyche is one of personal experience and this intimate nature of process is the basis of any and all clinical work. This contrasts with many other theories that are more like a set of ideas to apply to someone else.

Therefore we will explore the basics of Jung’s model of the psyche – and its transformation – in a direct and impactful way. Since this work is based on ones own experience, this course will involve meditations, drawing, movement, play-work and writing. We will also compare this kind of contemplative process with monastic codes and spiritual practices from various eastern and western traditions. There will certainly be an opportunity to share these experiences with the group but due to the nature of these experiences this will not be required.

That is, any of this material can remain private while still being credited with full class participation. In sum, we will develop a familiarity with Jungian core concepts and vocabulary such as the complex, shadow, the animae and the self, through engaging in exercises developed by Jung and also some other ones implied by his theory and others developed subsequently by the instructor.

Fall Trimester Learning Objectives:

– Students will be develop an experiential understanding of Jung’s basic concepts.

– Students will be able to understand the relationship between Jung’s contemplative and clinical work.

– Students will develop an understanding of how psychological contemplation compares with contemplative practice derived from historical traditions.

– Participants will aim to have an experience of their own psychological process and how this informs their clinical work.
