To Hugh Crichton-Miller
My dear Crichton-Miller, 2 September 1939
I am sorry to be so late in answering your letter.
I am convinced that Prof. Goring has not properly understood your motives in proposing Dr. van der Hoop.
But that has little or nothing to do with his inability to understand English.
It has everything to do with his general inability.
Please have no feelings of inferiority on the score of your misunderstanding Prof. Goring’s very simple psychology.
It has surely nothing to do with your ignorance of the German language.
If you suspect Goring of foolish prestige motives you are not far from the truth.
The trouble we have to deal with-or we had to deal with-is rather the usual one in any international organization.
What one ought to have is an official translator who faithfully renders every nonsense the speaker says.
But ail this-helas!-is already an echo from the past.
The devil knows how the world will look if we ever meet again.
So for the time being we need not worry about future congresses, delegate meetings, translators, etc. Hitler is reaching his climax and with him the German psychosis.
Good luck to you.
I thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely and cordially yours,
