Do you deny the existence of the schism or of Anti-Christianity?

Letters of C. G. Jung: Volume I, 1906-1950 (Vol 1)

To H. Irminger

Dear Herr Irminger, 20 November 1944

Allow me to express my astonishment that you lay so much stress on my being “reft asunder,” as though this were something extraordinary that ought not to be.

Have you still not noticed that the Church, indeed Christianity itself, is reft asunder?

Do you deny the existence of the schism or of Anti-Christianity?

As Christians and human beings we are therefore reft-moreover does not Przywara S.J. write somewhere about a “rift”?

On this rift we are all crucified.

I am conscious of this fact in myself as well as in my fellow men, among whom there are some very positive Christians.

It is scarcely possible that you are unconscious of the conflict within yourself (which is just what being “reft asunder” means.)

Even the Christian Paul had that man of violence, Saul as the angel of Satan, to buffet him in the face.

One shouldn’t evade this conflict by escaping into a premature and anticipated state of redemption, otherwise one. Provokes it in the outside world.

And that is of the devil.

Yours sincerely,

C.G. Jung [Letters Volume 1, Page 353
