Dear Mr. Priestley, 17 July 1946

Since I saw you I have read several of your novels and plays and I enjoyed them very much.

was particularly impressed by the two aspects of your personality.

Your one face is so much turned to the world that one is surprised again and again to meet another face which is turned to the great abyss of all things.

I just wanted to tell you my impression as I want to let you know how much I appreciate the superhuman faculty of looking at things with a straight and with an inverted eye.
