Visions : Notes of the seminar given in 1930-1934 (2 Volume Set) (Bollingen)

The idea [of the mandala] is that one should not leave the center, yet one should function like the governor of a city who dwells in the innermost temple of the forbidden city.

His employees, his subordinates, go out and in through the gates, but not he, he remains in the center and is well protected.

Therefore there are gates and walls, showing the aspiration is not to be dead and buried in the mandala, but to function through the mandala. Carl Jung, Visions Seminar, Page 265.
