Fear is aggressivity in reverse

C.G. Jung Letters, Vol. 1: 1906-1950

To: Dr. S.

Dear Colleague, 30 September 1948

Fear is aggressivity in reverse.

Consequently, the thing we are afraid of involves a task.

If you are afraid of your own thoughts, then your thoughts are the task.

Hence you are absolutely right in your argumentative letter about the spirit.

It was just my intention to reduce such complications to their primary form.

In this respect my essay is certainly exoteric, but in this very exotericism lies a quite special esotericism, since spirit is aboriginal and probably always an agens per se, and can therefore never be
caught in intellectual form.

It is a primordial phenomenon.

But from the empirical, psychological standpoint one can also call it a quality which attaches to certain psychic contents in contradistinction to the material, concrete label.

With kind regards,
.
Yours sincerely,

C.G. Jung ~Carl Jung, Letters Vol. 1, Page 509.
