To Henriette Goodrich
My dear Mrs. Goodrich, 20 May 1940
Your very kind letter has touched me profoundly.
I hope I have not to avail myself of your most generous proposition.
My whole family including 11 grandchildren have gone to a refuge in the mountains near Saanen.
All my sons are with the army.
Zurich is-in case of war-threatened with complete destruction, because it is just in the main line of defence.
We have here the feeling as if one were sitting on a box full of dynamite that might go off in the next moment.
Yet one is quiet, because it is a great fatality.
For the time being I am also in Saanen, but I am planning to go back to Zurich as soon as it seems certain that the war gets stabilized in the north.
Actually it looks as if Italy prefers an undisturbed Switzerland.
Even the dictators mistrust each other.
We are all terribly sorry for England and France.
If they should lose the war, we also shall not escape the reign of the Antichrist.
But we Swiss cling to our soil and we share its fate.
Thank you for your kindness!
