To Frau V.
Dear Frau V., 12 May 1956
After your kindness in sending me these excellent bottles of Chateauneuf du Pape, I really did expect that some quite special favours had been piling up on your side.
But if you are now in the dumps and up to your ears in the mire, you must tell yourself That you were obviously flying too high and that a dose of undiluted hellish blackness was indicated.
The pickle you are in is certainly something you couldn’t have brought on yourself.
This shows that someone “out there” is surrounding you with provident thoughts and doing you the necessary wrong.
You should regard your present situation as a mud bath from which after a while a small morning sun will burst forth again.
“Patience be damned,” says Faust, and you need it most of all.
For your age and your circumstances you are still much too fractious.
The devil can best be beaten with patience, having none himself.
With best wishes,
C.G. Jung ~Carl Jung, Letters Vol. II, Page 298.
